When the game has ended, and the spectators and athletes have gone home, a high school gym takes on a new appearance. There are singing maintenance workers, a site manager who wants to go home, helpful workers, and sometimes a reporter getting in the way. Over the last two nights I have had interesting experiences, encounters, and one story saving phone call. Every other Sunday afternoon for the past four months, at least two dozen pious Mojo acolytes have taken the pilgrimage to Krieg Softball Complex to pay homage to their venerable kickball icons. Their communion: coolers filled with Gatorade and baskets of bananas. Their sacred robes: the “chaser” belts worn by those players attempting to retrieve balls from fielders. Their apostles: three Mojo-appointed referees. This meeting includes the head coaches, directors of athletics and sports information directors from both schools. In addition, the SNCC game committee, game officials, 25-second clock operator, chain crew, clock operator, security, public address announcer, band directors for each team, television representatives from ESPN and NCAA representatives will be in attendance.
